How long does the buying process take?

On average 6 to 12 weeks from signing the preliminary purchase contract (contrato de arras) to the final transfer at the notary. For new build this can be longer.

What is a contrato de arras?

Accepted Answer

This is the preliminary purchase contract. You typically pay 10% of the purchase price as a deposit. If the seller withdraws, you receive double back. If you withdraw, you lose the deposit.

Can I buy without being present at the notary?

Yes, this is possible via a notarial power of attorney (poder notarial). We or your lawyer can then sign on your behalf at the notary. This is a common procedure.
